Would you like to bring a robinia into the garden? Then you have to consider a few things. After all, this is a fairly large tree.Robinias reach heights of up to 25 meters. The robinia is a deciduous tree or a deciduous shrub. It depends on the variety.
If you choose the robinia as a tree, you should keep in mind that it can get very tall. The robinia can reach a height of up to 25 meters and a trunk circumference of up to one and a half meters. It is therefore only suitable if you have a lot of space in the garden. Robinias also grow quickly and are hardy. Because the leaves resemble the acacia, robinia is also called false acacia, false acacia or silver rain because of the leaf color.
Time for planting
It is best to plant robinia in spring or autumn. If the locust is planted in spring, it has enough time until autumn to grow well. If the plants are container, you can also plant the robinia all year round, but the soil must be frost-free.
Location & soil
The most important prerequisites for the tree to develop well: A light, wind-protected location and a nutrient-rich, loose soil are best suited for the robinia. But it also grows on dry sand and gravel soils and on a nutrient-poor surface.
How to plant the robinia properly
Zunächst First check whether you really have enough space. The distance to the house wall and the neighboring property plays an important role. The final crown diameter can be up to ten meters. So that you do not have to part with your tree, a large distance is important from the start.
❷ Once the correct location has been found, you should loosen the soil properly. If the soil is very dry and sandy, work in fresh compost.
❸ Now dig out the planting hole. It should be about twice the size of the root ball. Then insert the black locust so that the stem is above the ground. Now fill the planting hole with soil and then water it well.
❹ You will help the robinia grow safely if you fix the tree with stakes for the first two years. It has a better grip.
Care after planting
In the first few weeks you have to water the robinia regularly. Later it is enough if you only water in midsummer or when the soil is very dry. Robinias have a moderate water requirement. The natural downpours are usually sufficient.
You can also fertilize the robinia when the first leaves appear in spring. But this is not absolutely necessary. If you want to fertilize, use a liquid fertilizer every two weeks. From September / October the robinia no longer needs fertilizer.
Warning if you have children: All parts of the robinia are poisonous!
