Onions should not be picked randomly. There is an optimal time for this. You can find out what that is here. The leaves of the onion must be dry. When harvesting onions in your own garden, it is important to adjust the ideal time. Harvest time is usually late August / early September. It is very important that the bulbs are not taken out of the earth too early.
Recognize the right time to harvest
You should not stubbornly follow the calendar when harvesting onions. Only when the foliage by itself the onion has finished growing thin and yellowed.
In the old days, a trick was used to pull the harvest time forward a little. You just snapped off the leaves of the plants. However, you should not do that, because it will only help you to achieve emergency maturity. The yield could suffer significantly. Usually, a lot of sun in summer causes the plants to wither on their own.
You can only help a little if the weather is not so favorable. To do this, the onions are lifted gently and gently using a digging fork. This causes the fine roots to tear off. The plants can then no longer absorb water and subsequently yellow and dry up.
" Watch out: If you harvest onions too early, the shelf life deteriorates considerably.
Harvesting the onions and ripening
For the harvest of the vegetables you should definitely choose a phase with dry weather. If the bulbs are moist when harvested, they will not store well.
➢ Step 1:
The onions are pulled out of the earth and rubbed with your hands, which loosens the loose part of the skin. The leaves are removed about five centimeters above the neck.
➢ Step 2:
So that you can store the onions for a longer time, a shell that is as firm as possible should form. For this reason, the onions are left to ripen for seven to ten days. If the weather is dry, you can simply leave it on the bed for this purpose. In damp weather, they can also be easily dried under one roof. Or you can bundle the onions together and hang them up in a suitable place. It is important that the place is airy and dry.
➢ Step 3:
Do not let the onions ripen in the blazing sun. A climate that is too warm causes the outer shell to burst easily. You don't necessarily have to hang the onions to ripen, you can also put them loose in wooden boxes. After 10 days at the latest, the leaves should be completely dry, then the remains of the roots and loose shells are removed.
" Tip: If onions are damaged, they should be provided for early consumption and should not be stored. Well-matured onions can be stored dry in the cellar for several months.
