The spherical robin can be propagated using three different methods. We give the tips, you decide which variant suits you more.

What are the options for propagation?
- cuttings
- seed
- finishing
Durch Propagation by cuttings
Root cuttings can be cut from the spherical robin in spring or autumn. The cuttings should be about ten centimeters long and about two centimeters thick. Now fill smaller plant pots with a mixture of soil and sand. The cuttings should no longer have leaves in their lower area. If the cuttings are placed in the ground, mold growth could otherwise occur. The earth is kept evenly moist. Place the plant pots in a bright and warm place and increase the watering as soon as new shoots and leaves appear. After the formation of several pairs of leaves, the young plant can be potted and transplanted to its final location.
❷ Propagation by sowing
Propagation by sowing may be somewhat more complex, but you will also be able to use this method to grow numerous young plants. If you already have a spherical robin, you can easily get the seeds yourself. In late autumn, the elongated fruits of the spherical robin can be harvested. They then took on a brownish color. If the seeds are stored in a cool and dry place over the winter, ideally tightly sealed in a can, sowing can begin in the coming spring.
Propagation by sowing - step by step
- Score seeds
- Let the seeds swell
- Select planters
- Fill planters with soil
- Insert seeds
- Place the planter in a bright and warm place
- Keep substrate moist
- Wait for germination
➔ Tip: Covers should be ventilated regularly to prevent mold from forming.
Germination begins after about ten days and you can expect a successful multiplication. From a height of about ten centimeters, the young plants can be placed outdoors or receive a larger planter. You can also carry out direct sowing outdoors. The seeds are prepared as described and sown directly from mid-May.
❸ Propagation through grafting
The propagation by grafting actually belongs to gardeners, but can also be carried out by experienced hobby gardeners. The grafting is done by grafting shoots of the spherical robinia onto the trunks of the common robinia. This ensures that the trunk no longer grows higher, but only increases in width while the spherical crown forms.
Grafting is a proven method of growing plants. A fine rice is grafted onto a base. The grafting was once called "fur" and comes from the Latin name "propaginare". This finishing method is used for fruit and ornamental trees. The pointed branches are pushed into the cut trunk of the robinia. This can be done by hand. In nurseries, finishing machines are also often used.
The types of propagation with their advantages and disadvantages
propagation method | advantages | disadvantage |
cuttings | This method is easy to carry out and has a fairly high guarantee of success. | A spherical robin is required. |
seed | Several plants can be grown. The seeds can be obtained from existing plants. | The seeds must first be overwintered and then swell, which means a lot of effort. |
relief arrangements | You can immediately gain a full-bodied and vigorous plant. | This method should be carried out by experienced gardeners. |
What happens to the young plants?
If the young plants that they have grown themselves have reached an appropriate size, they are transplanted to the desired location. It is important to ensure that the plants are placed in a loose soil. The substrate should be well drained so that the roots can spread out in the soil and the plant can grow well. The young plants need sufficient water in the first weeks after planting. Older plants usually obtain liquid and nutrients from the roots. If you mix the substrate with compost when planting, you create a good basis for growth and the spherical robin can supply itself with sufficient nutrients.
